A love story that could only come from Guillermo del Toro. A deft mix of fantasy, drama and romance with a fantastic lead in Sally Hawkins, with likewise excellent performances from Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins and Michael Stuhlbarg. It can get a bit weird, but overall del Toro once again proves he is the master of fantasy.

"The Shape of Water" is a whimsical and wondrously filmed mixture of romance, fantasy, science fiction, and a slight dash of Del Toro's plain old weirdness.

The Shape of Water is a stunning ensemble effort, as Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Shannon offer fine performances while the breathtaking work from Hawkins and Jones anchors, enrich and enhance the film.

Brilliant performances and other technical executions were there. It's just that I didn't feel as much I should do in this supposedly drama with unexpected romance in a context of a sci-fi plot.

"Free Willy" for adults this time.

“The natives in the Amazon worshipped it.
Like a god.
We need to take it apart, learn how it works.”

I’ve watched this movie the night before the Oscar ceremony, because I could feel it in my bones this film would possibly win that coveted statuette. Initially, I didn’t want to post my opinion about this winner. But as I had partially written down my opinion, I thought I would smooth off the rough edges and post it anyway. To be honest, I’m not part of the great crowd of admirers of “The shape of water“. Even though I was looking forward to it with great expectations and knew it was a creation made by Guillermo del Toro (I appreciated his previous films) I was only moderately enthusiastic about it. In the end I stayed behind with a “that’s it ?” feeling. Why the jurors of the academy...

Tenderness in Uexpected Romance

I’ve seen Guillermo del Toro’s latest phantasy drama, cold war era period piece, interspecies romance: a delightful celebration of love in and of itself. Emerging as an early Oscar frontrunner, the film tells the story of Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute woman who works at a government’s facility as a cleaning lady in the early 1960s. She discovers that in the facilities a marine creature (Doug Jones) of an unknown species is being held captive. Colonel Richard Strickland (Michael Shannon) pretends to dissect this creature in order to gain favour from his superiors, something that Elisa isn’t willing to let happen.

Del Toro moves away from the mecha-kaiju spectacle to the territory in which he operates best, and that is a fantasy drama that is sweet and deeply personal. His vision transp...
